Basic Backgammon Strategies
Backgammon is a game for two players. Basically, the main objective of the game is to take your checkers off before your enemy does. A novice player might notice that techniques are hard to come up on his own. However, the basic strategies in backgammon can be actually applied on the board if you remember these tips easily.
Distribution shows how your checkers are spread among the points occupied. It is often better to come up with even distribution; that is 2 checkers on each point than 3 checkers and 1 checker on separate points. The worst case is probably 4 checkers on one point and none on the other, because this makes your board almost inflexible.
Another basic strategy in backgammon is not to be afraid in establishing a strong offense or defense. However, be more cautious as your enemy's board appears to be stronger. The more points he holds, the more difficult it is for you to play daringly.
On the other hand, the more points that you hold strongly in your opponent's board, it is advisable that you play boldly. However, even if his board is frail, it is still best to limit your exposure to no more than four. If you are drastically ahead of your opponent, controlling your exposure reduces the possibility that your opponent will catch up.
Spotting the important checkers is another basic strategy. In the backgammon board, watch out for important checkers that your opponent might use to cover a significant point. Plan your hit more thoroughly, and then hit it. Remember to do so when it is advantageous to your boars. Do not remain side-tracked and tempted.
Also, try to establish a defensive point, or anchor, in your enemy's board. This gives you a backup if ever you get hit. Plus, it lessens you opponent's ability to establish his own home board. Build an anchor in on the higher points of 20 or 21 early in the game. However, as you lag way behind, lower points (22, 23, or 24) actually create more value because you are yet trying to build your home while waiting for a shot. Neighboring points on the backgammon board is a good strategy in building two anchors.
Playing backgammon may be easy to learn after watching a few games. But in order to win, one must consider the basic strategies in backgammon. Those basic strategies will guide the player on how to manage his board, and eventually come up with a few winning techniques on his own.
